The Reluctant Hustler | Mixes from DJ Duke Shin

This mix is just a little mini, recorded live during the 2nd edition of Tech.Tonic at Katacombs, which featured 2 personal faves of mine as guests in techno mistress Sassmouth--in her first official Chicago gig since moving back from London--and omnipresent Chi-town house talent John Simmons. I sandwiched this set in-between 2 shorter segments from my fellow co-resident Merrick Brown at the front of the evening, mixing in from his selection of Roman Flugel's "Brasil." At times kinda deep, kinda techy, kinda breaky, and kinda soulful, I had fun setting up the mood of the room and taking a few turns to keep everyone on their toes... enjoy!

We love Detroit. Seriously. And TV Lounge is awesome. Barreling up I94 to Detroit for a lightning strike, we weren't sure what to expect. But people came our early, and Jordan Bradley did a great job warming things up. Then Nate played the first 30, I played the next 30, and we tagged the rest of the way for what might be our best (recorded) tag set to date... needless to say we can't wait to come back and do it all over again... enjoy!

Lokua and Moment Sound run a nice midweek gathering at the Morseland--an eclectic music lounge, bar and restaurant hidden-gem-kinda-joint up north in the Rogers Park neighborhood. I'd been up there before to catch a few friends DJ previously, but the distance has kept me from going back as often as I'd like. Host Lokua invited me up and had a nice set up on stage. He opened with a live ambient drone/soundscape performance that I mixed into around 11pm, dropping about a 75m set. While I was never completely comfortable with the mixer due to a lack of visible peak monitors, the recording was less uneven than I thought, and as I listened to it a few times (albeit late, in my car, windows down), I deemed this mix worthy of posting. Sure, there's some repeat tracks on here, but also a few new faves, like Gary Todd, Jake & Amber (first thing of Minus I've bought in ages) and Wighnomy Brother Robag's retread for a lead-off track. Enjoy!

I arrived at the Peoplemuver loft, the venue for the Mass Transit parties, after a long night of working.  It was 2:30am on Sat night, and I could hear the deep bass rumbling outside over the din of city traffic and the drunken Chad n' Trixie hijinx normal for that time of night in that part of town... Peoplemuver sits in the heart of Wrigleyville.  Also on the bill for the evening were fellow DJs m50 and silent{k}, and live performances from AutoAxon and host Kawa.  m50 must have set the table nicely earlier in the night, and the crowd was packed. Kawa was slammin' some hard-nosed techno, and the guests were up and havin' it.  I started DJing after Kawa's live set around 3:30am.  Initially, I wasn't planning on posting this set because there are a few tracks on here that pop up in other podcast episodes, and I also just posted a 3hr opening set from Smart Bar from the wknd before.  But as I listened to the recording, and thought about what great fun it was to play Mass Transit, I changed my mind.  My mission was to infuse just a touch of soulfulness for the late hour, along with a touch of eclecticism into the night (if it is not cool to play Scuba, Plaid, Carl Craig, Love and Rockets and Dances with White Girls in the same set, someone really needs to tell me!), while keeping the crowd moving, and taking advantage of the fortunate position I held--closing out the party.  From packed house to bitter end, this recording is the result... enjoy!

Graced with a 3hr opening DJ slot for the live Chicago debut of one of my favorite producers in Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts, this set starts with a deep groove and gets weird, deep, techy, wonky, and traverses a range of tempos from 110-128 bpms, ending with a kiss of favorites... this was a super fun night after a great Summer of wonderful opportunities. It was t-minus 8 hours til departure... a crazy week of tying up lose ends before an epic and longstanding vacation (a full week and a DJ set as a perfect cherry on top!)

Playing from around midnight til 2am, I had fun with this one, mixing the brand new with a couple faves that I can't seem to shake, and closing out on a more whimsical tip. Hung out after for a nightcap, went home, did a final load of very necessary laundry needed for the trip, and uploaded this set as I finished packing and was out the door... We were having a blast rockin the Museum of Contemporary Art's holiday-themed First Fridays event, but I had to make a bee line to Smart Bar to kick off the night with headliner STYLE OF EYE with a deep opening set, and would be joined later by Nate after he finished up at the MCA. He'd jump on and play for a bit, and the last hour we tagged until Style Of Eye was ready to rock a fully packed club--the fact that RJD2 was upstairs at Metro definitely didn't hurt! Great night... I really enjoyed getting the chance to start things off on the deep tip.

Just about any DJ relishes the opportunity to play late, and I am no exception. But once in a while, it's nice to start early and get a chance to stretch out on a set to really cover some ground. At Freakeasy 21, I got a rare chance to open the party with an extended 2 hour set. This live recording is the result...just the usual Mali-Kraut-Wonka-Tuba-Tech-Disco-House.

Recorded LIVE from Beviamo around 10-11pm

Incendiamo is the name of my new deep house/techno monthly, taking place every 3rd Thursday at Beviamo [1358 W. Taylor, Chicago]. The 2nd edition featured my good friends ARAN DANIELS [Proper|Modulation, Detroit] and NATE MANIC [Smart Bar, Chicago]. Aran and Nate played wonderfully, and it was a great crowd. We tried to stream video/audio live, but failed due to some sort of technical difficulties. But my friend was at least able to get some of my set recorded. The recording levels on his device were a little hot, but after much internal deliberation, I still think it sounds good enough to post as a live mix--I didn't hear too much clipping. And it captures the mood of the night pretty well. The recording starts about an hour into my set, and unfortunately ends roughly 20 minutes before Aran and Nate took over.

Between working wknds, an impending move and all the usual delights/rigors of summer, I haven't been able to post a proper new mix! Hopefully soon, once I get my studio up and running...but in the meantime, for a sultry, deep, summery vibe, please enjoy this recording.

For May, Crystallize teamed up with Safety Third Productions for Safety Dance, a fun night featuring special guests in dub-tasty riddim master Searchl1te, techno/house upstart Marcin Albekier, jungle-heavy DJ Ryan, and your host, me, kicking things off early at 9pm. Of course I love playing peak-time sets, but there is something about playing early, starting from zero, setting the table for the aural meal to follow--especially when it's my own night! Abstract beats and rarely played favorites give way to increasing tempos and crowds fill in... enjoy!
