Episode 35 - Reconstruct & ReUp 2: A Morning Close...
February 04, 2014 07:32 AM PST
When unable to make an anticipated morning close-out set, I took the preparation and sounds in my head to records the set that never was... here it is, to be enjoyed when things get late, really, really late (!)
January 21, 2014 02:31 PM PST
I recently had the pleasure of playing at the tied and Naughty Bad Fun Collective New Year party. My slot was early in Room 2, a "Back To Mine" themed room made for a more laid back environment from the more upbeat Room 1. It was so enjoyable getting the party started on a more eclectic tip, and I really felt good energy from the early attendees who enjoyed hearing something a little different than the usual *unst*unst*unst*. Days after the party and other really great gigs, too, the sounds from that early set still stuck with me, inspiring me to go into the studio and distill 2+ hours of tracks into this reconstructed, reinterpreted version of my contribution to that evening...

...and here's part 2 of my jam session with My Boy Elroy, a more upbeat affair than part 1...
May 17, 2013 03:02 PM PDT
It's a warm Spring evening in Chicago, and I headed over to my friend My Boy Elroy's to simply set up and jam out, recording the evening as we went along. This podcast episode is part one of the evening, with me starting up the front end of the mix until about the 48m mark, and Elroy closing out the back end...

What an amazing party put on by BurnerCare for the sake of grants for the uninsured and others within the community who need help. The decor was amazing, and the energy was thick in the air like the smoke. And the hands. A peak-time set following homies Justin Reed and Striz resulted in this recording of dependable floor fillers and left turns... Enjoy!

[enjoy!]Episode 18 - Hazy Fade of Winter [February '11 Mix]
February 09, 2011 04:45 AM PST
The dead of winter. Snowpocalypse. Then zero degree temps. A new mix. Recorded in one take on the night of Feb 8. Disco and deep tech grooves give way to warm doses of acid crunch, tech-house and increasing bass. Enjoy!

House, techno, tech-house, nu-disco, indie and the kitchen sink...all cuts inside, mixed with love from Chicago!
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but what is the value of a beat? A rhythm? A melody? Duke Shin doesn't have any of those answers for you, but what he does have is a musical arsenal of the loud and strange, gentle and nuanced, mid tempo slow burns and torrid electronic freak outs--all wrapped up in deep house love, driven with a cybernetic techno heart. And his search to answer the question in finding the value of music has lead him to DJing many clubs, bars, lounges and loft parties including favorites like Smart Bar, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the monthly Freakeasy parties in Chicago. Somewhere along the way, Duke has had the good fortune in opening for electronic dance music luminaries like M.A.N.D.Y., Seth Troxler, Holy Ghost!, Pär Grindvik and Moby, and has enjoyed playing afterparties for bands like the Dandy Warhols, TV On The Radio, Jamie Lidell and Nouvelle Vague. When he's not busy DJing, Duke also works as a music journalist, and has had countless features, reviews and interviews published in Resident Advisor, BPM Magazine, New City Chicago (where he previously served as Clubs Editor for over 2 years) and CityPages MN. With an ever-evolving sound, Duke never slows down, continuing his search for musical enlightenment while delighting (and occasionally befuddling) ardent dance floor denizens and lovers of the eclectic mix. Aside from current guest appearances, you can also catch Duke at his REFRACT monthly residency (along with co-resident Merrick Brown) at new hotspot Primary Nightclub, and at most of the infamous Freakeasy events...
